2 Types of Twin Turbochargers Designs

Two turbochargers are mainly used for larger, twin turbo engines so as to improve engine performance efficiently with less turbo lag. With two separate turbochargers operating either in parallel or in a sequence, these different types of twin turbo designs are differentiated by the method of their configuration to the engine’s air intake. All in all, twin turbos are said to have the abilities to provide great amounts of power, substantial potential for tuning as well as exceptional acceleration. Here, we look at the two common types of twin turbo layouts.

Parallel Twin Turbochargers

Parallel mounted twin turbochargers, the simplest twin turbo arrangement, are more commonly used in a V6 engine, with each of the two turbochargers sharing one-half of the engine’s cylinders. The parallel layout, in which both identical turbochargers supply air to the intake manifold simultaneously, reduces the amount of piping required for the plumbing of the intake and exhaust systems. This then results in increased response as well as decreased turbo lag.

Parallel twin turbochargers are also somewhat smaller in size so as to maintain a quick response, thus along with sophisticated engine electronics, they can provide limited high end power delivery and boost potential while adding to the engine’s fuel economy.

Sequential Twin Turbochargers

Also known as “two-stage turbo”, the sequential twin turbochargers consists of a paired combination of a smaller turbocharger, which operates at lower engine speeds for low end response and a larger one which kicks in at higher engine speeds for high rpm power. In this twin turbo arrangement, the smaller turbocharger which maintains quick response at lower engine speeds will help to spool the larger turbocharger via the increased exhaust flow in order to reduce turbo lag as well as to reach the maximum boost pressure. The sequential twin turbochargers primarily used in diesel engines in diesel-powered vehicles.
